5th Annual Lake to Lake Challenge

The Lake to Lake Challenge is a timed paddlecraft event for all skill levels on the Class I Shenango River Water Trail in Mercer County, PA. A guaranteed water release at Pymatuning Dam helps create ideal paddle conditions.

Choose the 15 Mile Sprint Challenge (Competitive Class) or the 15 Mile Adventure Challenge. Both start near Kidd’s Mill Covered Bridge and finish at NorthStar Marina on Shenango River Lake. A post-challenge awards ceremony with food and refreshment vendors takes place at the finish line.

Course change for 2026: The original 30-mile competitive challenge is now a 15-mile sprint due to a safety hazard on the upper Shenango River near Greenville, PA, and lack of safe portage around that hazard.

  • Date: Saturday, August 22, 2026
  • Distance: 15 miles (Sprint Competitive & Adventure)
  • Start: Kidd’s Mill Covered Bridge Park, West Kidd’s Mill Rd, Transfer, PA 16154
  • Finish: NorthStar Marina, 2802 Lake Road, Clark, PA
  • Sprint start: 11:00 a.m. (Adventure rolling start follows)
  • Cutoff: Finish within 7 hours

Covered bridge to marina

Official course notes from the event organizers describe river character, current, and the lake finish.

The Shenango River is a mix of pools, fast-moving water, and still water. Water is dark green — visibility is often only about 12 inches. The river begins at the outflow from Pymatuning Dam, which can control flow. The upper river is winding and narrow; after the Little Shenango joins near Greenville the channel widens with moderate current and short Class I stretches.

The 15-mile competitive and adventure races start at Kidd’s Mill Covered Bridge. The river continues with moderate flow for about 10 miles into Shenango Lake, where powerboat wake and wind may create waves. About 5 miles of lake paddling lead to the finish at NorthStar Marina (2802 Lake Road, Clark, PA — at the Rt. 18 causeway behind the Tara Country Inn). The river and lake are managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; life jackets must be worn at all times.

Full rules & safety

Safety, families & every ability

Designed so the whole community can enjoy a day on the Shenango River — whether you’re racing for prizes or paddling for the adventure.

Is the Lake to Lake Challenge safe for families?

Yes. Safety is the organizers’ top priority. The course runs on Class I water with a guaranteed release from Pymatuning Dam for predictable conditions. Every paddler wears a U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jacket at all times, carries a signal whistle and communication device, and gets a mandatory safety briefing before the start.

Families and bank support can follow along from multiple observation points and public access sites along the river and lake. Spotters and volunteers are positioned at pass points and access areas so you’re never far from people who are watching the water. Water and energy snacks are available every 4–5 miles — another set of eyes and a chance to check in on the way.

What if I get tired or need to get off the water?

You can pull out. The course is lined with public access points and river pull-outs so paddlers who need a rest, a longer break, or a full stop can leave the water safely. Bank support can meet you at those same spots with water, food, or a ride. Self-support paddlers may use any of the pull-outs along the route.

This isn’t a “tough it out or fail” event. Finishing within seven hours is the goal for those who want the full challenge — but knowing you can step off the river if weather, energy, or comfort change is part of how the day stays safe for everyone.

Can people of all abilities enjoy the day?

That’s the heart of the Covered Bridge Edition. Organizers built two paths on the same scenic 15-mile route so more people can take part:

  • 15 Mile Sprint (Competitive) — for racers chasing time and $7,900 in cash prizes, with clear craft categories for longer racing boats.
  • 15 Mile Adventure — for recreational paddlers, adventure racers, families in the right craft, and competitive paddlers without a race boat. Touring kayaks, sit-on-tops, canoes, and similar craft under 16' are welcome.

Tandem options let an adult paddle with a youth ages 14–17. A rolling start for Adventure Class, a generous seven-hour window, on-course snacks, shuttle service, and bank-support-friendly access points all lower the barrier so you can enjoy the river at your pace — not only at race pace. The finish at NorthStar Marina includes awards, food, and vendors so the celebration is for everyone who came out for the day.

How do observation points help spectators and support crews?

Supporters don’t have to wait only at the finish. Public access along the Shenango River Water Trail gives families and crews several places to cheer, hand off water or snacks, and keep an eye on their paddlers. Mandatory pass points with on-land spotters add structure: boat numbers are checked so organizers know who is still on course. That network of eyes — volunteers, spotters, and loved ones — is intentional. It turns a long paddle into a shared day, not a solo stretch of river with no way for family to stay involved.

What makes this course approachable for newer paddlers?

The Shenango River Water Trail is Class I — pools, moderate current, and short easy stretches rather than whitewater. The 2026 layout is a 15-mile covered-bridge-to-marina course (not the former 30-mile upper-river option), with about 10 miles of river and 5 miles of lake paddling into NorthStar Marina. Adventure Class is priced accessibly, allows everyday touring craft, and follows the Sprint start so the water stays less crowded. Add shuttle service to the start, day-of registration options, and clear equipment lists, and the day is set up for first-timers and seasoned racers to share the same event.
